The beluga known as Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie Botts is an adorable little “playful character”. Orion – called “Onion” – is a large but very loyal friend. Zephyr has “constant motion” and sways like a wiggly creature. Lillooet the beluga is the “loving presence” with a kind nature.

Thirty captive marine mammals in a Canada-based amusement park have become pawns in a disagreement between a closed attraction, local and national governments and welfare campaigners.

But those working directly with the whales say the impassioned controversy over their fate often overlooks the nuances of the whales who, after growing up in confinement, have been thoroughly researched by the people who interact with them daily.

After the national authorities disallowed the transfer of the belugas to a foreign facility, the struggling attraction near the famous falls where they are held stated it would consider to euthanize them unless the government pays for the cost of their care. The nation’s marine resources official has denied that request, placing the thirty whales in an ever more uncertain position.

Intelligent Marine Mammals

Scientists say that beluga whales’ brain structure, along with their mimicry abilities, problem solving and group interactions indicate they are deeply intelligent mammals – something one caretaker observed directly.

Burgess spent three years as a beluga trainer, a job that required gaining confidence of the sea creatures.

“Developing those bonds over time takes a lot of regularity and a lot of affection. At the start, they’re very unsure of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more vulnerable with you. It’s just so wonderful and rewarding.”

The trainer knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was even so astounded by the subtleties and idiosyncrasies in their dispositions. She formed a particular love for two female belugas with different temperaments.

“Eve chose me. The other made me earn it,” she said. “Both transformed the way I view bonding.”

Public Concerns and Deteriorating Conditions

Her relationship with the whales developed against a context of growing public opposition to their enclosure.

During her three years at the park, seven belugas and the park’s one orca, the orca, passed away. In total, 19 belugas have died at the park since 2019, a number which the facility links to expected lifespan, but which advocates say reflects the substandard environment in which they were kept.

The facility did not operate to the visitors over the recent season, but the former trainer says she observed directly results of the cessation. “Concrete is deteriorating from the enclosures because they’re falling apart and not being maintained. The park did not reply to a questionnaire, but in the past claimed: “The whales … obtain far higher quality veterinary services and constant attention than any person in the UK, or other places.”

Fate in Limbo and Proposed Solutions

The former employee was dismissed from the park in the spring following the passing of Eos, an sick beluga the park staff had to euthanize. She said the park thought particulars of the death were leaked to the media and she was let go shortly thereafter.

The uncertainty over the whales’ future has left her and other caretakers in despair. She says the facility’s ultimatum to euthanize its whales is a leverage tool and is a “extremely difficult” undertaking, adding any efforts to euthanize even a one beluga would require “significant staff”, vehicles and machinery.

“There’s no way in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

She supports requests for the whales to be transferred immediately from the facility, with its crumbling tanks and dwindling staff.

In recent months, the nation’s government official rejected a bid to send the whales to China.

“Granting the proposal would have meant a continued situation in enclosure and a reversion to performance for audiences,” the minister wrote. “As the public, we know that whales belong in the ocean, not in enclosures for our amusement. I could not in good conscience approve an transfer that would continue the situation these belugas have endured.”

But Burgess said the minister’s statements reveal a wider incorrect perception of the realities of life for belugas raised in confinement.

“The people needs to understand these are whales that have existed solely in enclosed habitats and they will need human care for the foreseeable future,” she said. “The public just don’t comprehend that it’s not as straightforward as saying ‘close it down’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As decision makers work to find a answer, ideas have emerged, some of which have minimal feasibility. An idea called for the belugas to be let go into the natural habitat of Canada’s north – where whales are a primary resource of nourishment for Inuit communities.

A suggested protected area in the province of eastern Canada, which now received government approval, has shown to be contentious. The future facility, which includes 100 acres of enclosed sea water, remains undeveloped. Proponents remain hopeful that it could in time represent a permanent solution for some of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among caretakers she’s discussed with, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “only an untested concept” in the whales’ fate.
