A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country struggling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before running away.

The purpose behind the shooting is unknown and no one has been arrested have been made, police said.

How It Happened

Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a building close to the city center landmark.

He had devoted time at the site supervising the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and clad in what looked like a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the incident.

Important clues, like bullet casings, were discovered at the crime scene.

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their location," added an official.
